Report & Reflect 2.6

Please make sure your Autobiographical Incident Essay is Shared AND DONE!  If you can't share it via the iPads, use one of the iMacs.

In class today, we are asking you to complete Report & Reflect 2.6 online.  Select your class below:

When you have finished R&R2.6, please register for the AVID 10 section on turnitin.com, by clicking the relevant course link below AFTER YOU HAVE COPIED THE course # and memorized the enrollment key (it's millernerd  for ALL of Romo's sections).  If you have NEVER USED turnitin, you will have to create an account - ask us (or a peer) for help.

AVID10.2 (Period 2) = 11317937  enrollment key = millernerd
AVID10.6 (Period 6) = 11317960  enrollment key = millernerd

THEN...pick up a Characteristics/Values Matching (actually, a fill-in) sheet for AVID 10.  Each side is a different class (Period 2 & Period 6).  Look at the self-selected Characteristics & Values and write in the name of the person you believe wrote them.  You are encouraged to seek out the person and confirm it.  When you are done - bring it to us and we'll see how well you know your peers!

You can use the rest of class time to use as you wish.

ENJOY YOUR 16 DAYS!!!!

Report & Reflect 2.5

READ EVERYTHING BEFORE DOING ANYTHING!!!

You must first complete this week's LearningLog/Report & Reflect 2.6.  Make sure you flip the switch so a copy of your submission is emailed to you - think of it as a receipt.  Check your email and see what your submitted work looks like - that is what we will see.  Click your Class Link Below:

When you have finished R&R 2.6, use the rest of class to complete any missing work, STARTING WITH AVID:  Go back to Wednesday's entry and start, continue/finish, or redo (sadly) your "My Characteristics & Values" worksheet entry.  Again, flip the switch so a copy of your submission is emailed to you.

When you are done, give yourself a self-affirmation and plow through work for other classes - print out any missing work so you have it for the weekend!

Oh, and enjoy the weekend - you have to submit a TRF for Tuesday OR Thursday, but YOU MUST have a MATH TRF for Tuesday ALSO.  We'll be following the routine below until further notice:

Monday - AVIDy stuff - strategies, writing, etc.
Tuesday - TRFs Due - TWO!!! One for Math and one for Eng/Sci/Soc.  We will go through the Math ones, study up and offer math support either at the end of Tuesday or beginning of Thursday.
Wednesday - AVIDy stuff - strategies, writing, etc.
Thursday - Tutorials
Friday - Report & Reflect and free work time.

My Characteristics & Values in Google

The process of writing usually involves you wanting to skip over the preparation and jumping right in to writing, printing, and submitting...then moving on to the next assignment.  But there is MORE TO IT!

You have a project to be completed this qtr, which we are working toward completing...in little steps.  Remember the interviews?  Remember the introductions you wrote - about your interviewees and yourself?  Remember the "My Characteristics & Values" handout from Monday?  These are all part of a larger assignment.

Today, you will enter your "My Characteristics & Values" into a GoogleForm - BOTH SIDES.  You MUST finish this TODAY.  Do not waste your time and be mindful that you will have to write two paragraphs of at least 80 words each. We will take your submissions and share the results back with you on Friday or Monday - whenever we can get the Chromebooks again!?!?!

When/If you finish, you can write & submit a TRF for tomorrow.

Got it?  Now start filling in the My Characteristics & Values GoogleForm by clicking this link.

By Way of Introductions

Grab a Chromebook

Find your "Interviews" Document (from last week) and SHARE IT WITH YOUR 3 INTERVIEWEES - if you do not know each person's last name...ASK!

Create a New Document, titled (depending on class period) - PAY ATTENTION TO SPACING:

  • Period 1:  AVID09.1 My Introduction Last, First
  • Period 2:  AVID10.2 My Introduction Last, First
  • Period 5:  AVID09.5 My Introduction Last, First
  • Period 6:  AVID10.6 My Introduction Last, First

SHARE IT with L. Eduardo Romo

You should see the three documents from people who interviewed you under the "Shared with me" menu in the left window pane.

Open each, copy the paragraph about you and paste it into "My Introduction"
Please make sure to include WHO WROTE IT - the document author's name is in the document title.

At the top of your "My Introduction" document, write your own 1-paragraph introduction using material written about you from your peers.  If you have nothing, or not enough from your peers, use your own best judgement to write about yourself - what should others know about you before meeting and working with you?

The sample layout should look like this:

I am... (finish your one paragraph)

INTRO FROM STUDENT X
(this should be a complete paragraph intro from X)
I would like to introduce...

INTRO FROM STUDENT Y
(this should be a complete paragraph intro from Y)
Let me tell you about...

INTRO FROM STUDENT Z
(this should be a complete paragraph intro from Z)
...is a very interesting person with a lot of crazy ideas.

If/When you finish, make sure you completed Monday's Assignment as well (we will give it back to you upon request).

Course Teacher Online Presence

You picked up a handout (Course Teacher Online Presence) and used your own device, one of the mini-lab computers (we have 9 in the classroom), or one of the iCraps from the iPad cart (I prefer the Chromebooks - actual keyboard and personalized login with access to your GDrive) to look up teacher web pages.  We'll go through this and find the BEST and NOT-THE-BEST Teacher pages.

Tomorrow, we'll go through Cornell Notes (known as "Reflective Note-Taking" at WHS), and collect TRF #2 that MUST BE PRESENTED ON THURSDAY!

Work Day - For Conferences

We gave you a day to get ANY MISSING WORK completed & submitted.  After tomorrow, ALL "MISSING" work will simply be marked with a ZERO (0) and CANNOT BE CHANGED!!!  This may be the case in all of your classes, so fix what you can, while you can still do so!

In class tomorrow, the tutors will NOT be conducting tutorials. They will be visiting classes throughout the day, in order to get to know your teachers and get a feel for what WHS is like.

In AVID, we'll show you how to check your teacher class pages online and maybe grab their calendars into whatever device you regularly use.

Advice to High Schoolers

We read an article by the person who runs the Common App for college admissioons.  His advice had five main points:
As we read it aloud in class, you annotated for understanding.  That means tha you:
  • circled unknown/difficult words
  • underlined/highlighted key statements/takeaways
Upon completion, you then transferred your annotations into your notes, with five sections (one for each of the author's suggestions.
When you finished that part, you concluded by reflecting on the following prompt on the BACK of YOUR NOTES page:

What is one piece of advice you'd give yourself 4 weeks ago after living through them already?

Missing Work

You have (hopefully) done EVERYTHING in class, but simply forgot to submit it.  That is what the red MISSING indicator means.  The teacher has simply not seen your work.  If you have to finish it, get it done as soon as possible (ASAP) and turn it in the next day - your planner is your best friend here.  If you are positive that you turned in complete work, check for a no-name collection.  If it remains a problem, see me or Ms. G and we will try to help you deal with it as best you can.

For AVID, ALL assignments are linked to from within the portal.  For some classes, links to handouts may be available online through the teacher's classroom page.  If you cannot find a digital copy to download, visit with your teacher BEFORE or AFTER school, when s/he has the time to work with you individually.  Honestly, you will see a completely different person when there are only one or a handful of you seeking assistance.  Classes are only 50 minutes long, filled with over 30 bodies, and the agenda may need every second.

You are in High School now and cannot expect teachers to get your missing work together for you, nor check your grade for you.  You have access to the live gradebook, even as we are entering scores.  Stay organized,
